As international soccer comes to a pause, club soccer is finally back on. with that being said, there’s no better way to start club soccer than a few league matches followed by the Champions League. As a reminder, UEFA has launched a bracket that is quite similar to the NCAA basketball bracket. So if you’re interested in brackets of the sort, do try your luck and predict the results of the remaining UCL matches.
In the most interesting game of UCL, PSG managed to find holes in the current Champion’s defense and defeat them in the first leg today. Without their topscorer, Robert Lewandowski, Bayern was defeated for the first time in the champions league since March 2019. They had an amazing streak, but aren’t completely out of the competition since there is just a one goal difference in the first leg of the two. With Mbappe’s two goals against Bayern and eight in his past for CL matches, he is receiving a lot of praise and could very well lead PSG to a victory with Neymar’s help.
In another fascinating event, Real Madrid managed to beat Liverpool 3-1 despite Varane and Ramos being out due to COVID and an injury respectively. But luckily for Madrid, Vinicius Jr. and Asensio managed to step up and defeat the current English champions. Chelsea also packed a strong win against Italian Porto with two stunning goals.
Last, but certainly not the least, City managed to defeat Dortmund in a neck-to-neck game at the Etihad. Considering the next leg is going to be an away game for City, they’ll have to kick it up a notch if they’re in it to win it. Nonetheless, the game wasn’t entirely bleak for their young star Phil Foden who scored a magnificent goal and appeared to become friends with Dortmund’s wonder child, Haaland.
Speaking of City, their midfielder Kevin de Bruyne extended his contract until 2025 so City will likely continue to stay in shape. But Aguero is leaving City this summer as a huge loss. But his move could open up enough assets for City to look into Haaland. Haaland is also being devotedly sought out by Barcelona and Real Madrid as his father and Raiola, his agent, traveled to Spain. Barcelona also reportedly started seeking out Aguero to reunite him with his international teammate Messi.
