First off, both the La Liga officials and Barcelona have confirmed that Messi can not leave Barca for free due to his current contract. His release clause is set at 700 million Euros. Despite the letdown, Messi reportedly still wants to leave Barcelona.

Next, Manchester City has offered Messi a 700 million Euro deal in which he is set to play in Etihad with City for three years, followed by two years with NYC FC in the MLS. He has also been offered equity stakes at the City Football Group. Messi’s father/ agent, Jorge Messi, flew to Barcelona and is talking to Barca president Bartomeu. This meeting is very delicate for both sides due to the release clause and Bartomeu allegedly mishandling assets on the other. But if Messi does accept City’s deal then he would become the highest paid athlete OF ALL TIMES.
